Kecak is a main Balinese art drama show that tells the story of Ramayana and is played by local Balinese men. This arian is performed by many (tens or more) male dancers who sit in a circle and with a certain rhythm calling “cak” and raising both arms, describing the story of Ramayana when the line of apes helps Rama fight Rahwana. However, Kecak comes from the Sanghyang ritual, which is a dance tradition whose dancers will be in a state of unconsciousness, communicate with God or the spirits of their ancestors and then convey their hopes to the community.
The Kecak dance song is taken from the Sanghyang dance ritual. Additionaly, do not use musical instruments. Only light is used on the legs of the dancers who play the characters of the Ramayana
Around the 1930s Wayan Limbak worked with German painter Walter Spies to create a Kecak dance based on the Sanghyang tradition and parts of the Ramayana story. Wayan Limbak popularized this dance while traveling the world with his Balinese dancers.
